Day Out in Memory of a Special Friend
Members of the Town Council’s Friday Night Project youth group recently enjoyed a fabulous day at London Zoo in memory of a special friend.
The Friday Night Project is a youth group that supports young people with mild or moderate physical/learning difficulties, autistic presentations or confidence issues.
The community trip was arranged with the support of Nick and Sam Khaira in memory of their son Elijah, who sadly passed away this year. Elijah was a valued member of the FNP taking part in activities including cookery, arts & crafts, games, music and community activities, whilst receiving vital peer support in a safe and welcoming environment.
Elijah took on the role of ‘big brother’ to many within the group, especially the younger members who looked up to him. This friendship and love was evident by the turnout of his FNP friends and staff, both past and present, at his funeral.
Elijah’s parents wished to support the group by helping them not only remember their friend but to also build their confidence and independence whist learning important life skills. Supported by a fully DBS approved Youth Team with a wealth of experience of working with Autistic young people and other SENs, the group were able to visit their favourite animals, enjoy a bespoke experience of feeding the penguins as well as enjoy a tasty three course meal on the way home.
The Friday Night project supports young people aged 14 to 20 years old living in the Hedge End, Botley and West End area. They meet every Friday at the Hedge End Community Centre from 6.30pm until 9pm.
Places are allocated only on referral. For more details please contact youthteam@hedgeend-tc.gov.uk.
